(click documents to see details)

Marie Tybus born 1843, Dirschau, West Prussia

Marie Tybus, christened Anna Marie, was born on November 29, 1843, and christened on December 3, 1843.  Jacob's and Christina's first born.  Marie's Godparents are Johann Theil and Catharina Kalesjewska.  Marie will later marry and raise a family of about six children in Dirschau.

Strings.  On November 3, 1845, Wilhelmine Augustine Tibus, 21, marries Gotthard West, in East Prussia, and again I have found no link to our Tybus/Tibus family in West Prussia.

Johann Tybus born 1846, Dirschau, West Prussia

Johann Nicholas Tybus was born on February 17, 1846, and christened on February 22, 1846.  Jacob and Christina's first-born son.  Johann Nicholas' Godparents are Jacob Lalews (sp.?), Caroline Gors__(sp.?) and Johann Lelew (sp?).  It is possible that Johann Nicholas did not survive his first year.  (His name is not seen in any later records, and the next child is born in 18 months, suggesting that Christina stopped nursing prematurely.)  Having children every two years is fairly standard for German Catholic families at this time, and the children are frequently named after a godparent.  Four godparents are common in West Prussia in the 1800's, although normally only two are recorded in the church registry.

Peasant's uprising, 1846, West Prussia
Peasants unsuccessfully attack the Prussian troops stationed in Pr. Stargardt.  (Michael Norek's birth town.)  This came a few years before other uprisings in Western Europe.  Marx and Engels publish the Communist Manifesto in London on February 26, 1848.

August Tybus born 1847, Dirschau, West Prussia

August Tybus, christened Joseph August, was born on August 4, 1847, and christened on August 8, 1847.  Jacob and Christina's second son, and possibly the first son to survive.        August's Godparents are Jacob ____ (appears to be same as Johann Nicholas' Godfather), Jursina _______, Joseph _____, and Maria _____.  Was August named after the month of his birth, in addition to his namesake Godfather Joseph?  As will be seen below, he survived to adulthood.

1850 Education in West Prussia  Primary school, from the age of 6 to 14, was now compulsory.  Previously women were taught to read but not to write.  The execution of marriage contracts at this time indicate that about 84 % of the men and about 60 % of the women now can both read and write.

Anna Tybus born 1850, Dirschau, West Prussia

Anna Tybus, christened Anna Francisca, was born on May 5, 1850, and christened on May 9, 1850.  She is Jacob and Christina's second daughter.  Anna's Godparents are Franz Lalews (sp.?) and Francisca Lioders (sp ?).

In 1852 the railroad between Berlin and Danzig is completed.

Francisca Tybus born 1852, Dirschau, West Prussia

Francisca Tybus, christened Francisca Mosalia, was born on October 29, 1852, and christened on October 31, 1852.  She is Jacob and Christina's third daughter.  Francisca's Godparents are Joseph ___ (sp.?) and (sp.?).  As seen from the records below, we know that Francisca also survived.  She will be the Tybus free spirit.

Michael Tybus born 1854, Dirschau, West Prussia

Michael Tybus, christened Michael Marsia, was born on September 21, 1854, and christened on October 1, 1854.  He is Jacob's and Christina's second surviving son, and fifth surviving child.  Michael's Godparents are Marsia Mueller (sp ?) and Elizabeth ___(sp.?).

Michael, a lineal ancestor to all Norek second batchers, is born into a decent size family.  His oldest sister Maria is going on eleven.  His brother August is seven.  Anna is four and Francisca is going on two.  His father is about thirty-seven and his mother thirty-six.

In 1857 the bridge over the Vistula River at Dirschau is completed after twelve years of construction.  It is the longest bridge in Europe at that time.

Helena Tybus born 1857, Dirschau, West Prussia

Helena Tybus, christened Helene Christine, was born on April 17, 1857, and christened on April 19, 1857.  She is Jacob and Christina's fourth daughter, and her mother Christina's namesake.  Helena's Godparents are Joseph _____ and Wilhelmina ______.

Helena, a lineal ancestor to all Norek first batchers, is 2 ½ years younger than her brother Michael.  Future events pose a close relationship between them.  Each will be a godparent to the other's first-born child.  Michael will one day send his oldest daughter to Helena -- and that will be a major part of this story.

Franz Tybus born 1859, Dirschau, West Prussia

Jacob and Christina Tybus' last child was born on December 24, 1859, and christened Franz Stephen on December 26th .  His godparents are Vincent Laewrski and Fran____ Sweat.  Christina is 41 and Jacob 42.  In the span of seventeen married years, they have had 8 children, 4 boys and 4 girls.  Only one of the children, Johann, might have been lost as an infant, and of the 7 other children we have records showing at least six survived to adulthood.  I think Franz might have made it there also.
