Michael Tybus & Augusta Ponczek - 1884-1886 - Marriage, Children - Twins, Alfons
(click documents for details)

Michael Tybus & Augusta Ponczek married 1884, _______, West Prussia

Michael Tybus, 31, marries Augusta Ponczek, 25 (?), in 1884.  The church record of this marriage has not been located.  It was not recorded at Dirschau.  It probably is in Augusta's hometown or village somewhere in the area.  The year date is based on the date of birth of their first borns (twins).

My Baby book lists my Great grandparents Michael Tibus and Augusta Ponczek.  This is corroborated by Antonia's and Alfons' christening record (below and later) and by U.S. entry records identifying the closest relative as "Michael Tibus.".

Michael Tybus has nieces and nephews now, since his sister Marie has been married 14 years.  And his sister Francisca's boy, Michael L., would be 14 and possibly the oldest of the group.  The bride Augusta also has close family.

Michael Tybus' younger sister Helena Tybus is single at 28, and presumably dances with many young men at her brother's wedding.

The new sisters-in-law, Helena Tybus and Augusta Ponczek Tybus, could be about the same age.  We know Helena is 28, and my guess of Augusta's age of 25 could be too low.

If Christina and Jacob Tybus have survived to dance at this wedding, they are 69 and 70 and hopefully they still like to dance.

The twins Michael and Leonardo Tybus born 1885, Dirschau, West Prussia

On June 13, 1885, twins christened Franr. Michael and Anso. Leonardo were born to Michael and Augusta (Ponczek) Tybus.  Michael Tybus' younger sister Helena is the Godmother to Michael.  Anna Ponczek, presumably Augusta's sister, is Godmother to Leonardo.  The godfathers are Franr. Ziemann and Michael Jagielik.

The twins are christened on June 14th, the day after their birth.  Michael and Augusta Tybus' first-born children, and neither survived?  It is unlikely that either of the twins survived the first year, or even the first month.  Christenings are typically a few days after birth, not the very next day.  Neither is seen on later photos.  Neither is seen in any further record.  Alfons is born in 18 months later.

1885 Rate of Infancy Deaths in West Prussia.  The rate of infancy deaths in West Prussia -- deaths within the first year -- is 20.8% of legitimate births and 43% of illegitimate births.

Alfons Tybus born 1886, Dirschau, West Prussia

Michael and Augusta Tibus' third child, Alfons, was born on December 21, 1886.  He was christened Alphonso on December 26, 1886.  (The name he used on entry to the U.S. was Alfonso.)  His godparents were ??.  Alfons will be one of the two children who will leave West Prussia for Chicago.

LDS microfilm # 1,619,037.  Dirschau Katholische Kirche record of the 1886 birth and christening of Alfons Tybus.  Parents Michael Tybus and Augusta Ponczek.

Strings.  On August 1, 1887, Josephina Pionkoska died in Pr. Stargard – did emigration from West Prussia coincided with Josephina's death, cutting ties to the area.  This entry was noted because it contained no information, not even the age, which is highly peculiar.

1887 Emigration from West Prussia.  The pace of emigration from West Prussia to the U.S. has almost tripled.  The rate now is about 12,000 people each year.
