Ancestry Chapter 8

1888 - Michael Norek and Helena Tybus, Marriage
(click documents to see details.)

Helena Tybus & Michael Norek married 1888, Dirschau, West Prussia

On May 13, 1888, Helena Tybus, age 31, marries Michael Norek, age 23.  The residences of both are listed as "Dirschau."

Michael's age is recorded as "24" but he wouldn't turn 24 until September.  The groom being younger than the bride was not uncommon.  See church record that includes m/f ages at 25/30, 40/50, & 29/35.  Michael and Helena's 7 ½ years age difference is, however, at the high end for couples of childbearing ages.

Seen later is a minimizing the age difference in U.S. census records, which was not the only less-than-accurate information given to Census takers.  (Census records are great sources as to who was where when, but their other information is not absolutely reliable.)

LDS microfilm #583,800.  Dirschau Katholishe Kirke records.  May 13, 1888 marriage of Helena Tybus to Michael Norek.  Line 16, second from top.

Their witnesses were Frinistar Prieterk (sp.?) and Carstar __kredicz (sp.?).

Michael's occupation is listed as "Laborious" which translates literally to laborer, and probably means a non-farm employee, including skilled trades.  (We know he was a tool and die maker here in the U.S.)

Helena was the housekeeper to the priest of the parish.  Family legend is that there was some type of "scandal" about the marriage.  Nothing in this marriage record itself suggests anything overly scandalous, except ... (see Lucy's christening record below).  Was it the age difference, the last-minute marriage, Michael's unehel. birth, or something else?

Helena has lots of family in Dirschau, including her brother and sister-in-law Michael and Augusta, and their toddler Alfons.  Whether the groom had any family present is not known.

This marriage takes place about 8 months after the groom has completed his compulsory military service, including the reserve-status portion.  In other words, Michael Norek is now free to emigrate from his native country, and has been for 8 months.  (Emigration was not permitted in Prussia, of which West Prussia was a part, until military service was completed.)

Johann Tybus dies 1888, Pr. Stargard, West Prussia

On June 3, 1888, Francisca Tybus' illegitimate infant Johann dies at the age of 2 months, 3 days.  The death is recorded in the Pr. Stargard Catholic church, which lists the place of death as Rokoczyn.  Francisca is the sister who was married and had her first child when she was 18.  She is now 36.  This childhood death occurred three weeks after the marriage of her sister Helena to Michael Norek.
