Ancestry Chapter 9

1888 - Lucy's Birth to Michael and Helena Norek
1888 - Antonia's Birth to Michael and Augusta Tybus
(click documents to see details.)

Lucy Norek born 1888, Dirschau, West Prussa

Lucy Norek, christened Lucia Valeria Gertrudis, was born on October 14, 1888 and christened on October 21, 1888.

Lucy's Godfather is Helena's brother and Lucy's uncle Michael Tibus.  Michael Tibus himself is about to have a new baby also, and this baby will be named Antonia.

LDS microfilm #1,619,037, line 304.  Dirschau Katholishe Kirche records of the October 14, 1888 birth and October 21st christening of Helena Tybus & Michael Norek's first child Lucy.

There are comments by the priest in the last column of this christening record, and until they are translated, their significance, if any, is not known.

Three given christening names are uncommon here in West Prussia.  The conventional two given names are seen for Helena and all of her brothers and sisters, and Michael Norek was christened with a single given name.  The second "first born" Norek child will also have three christening names.

Preview.  Twenty years to the date later Michael Norek's second-batch first child will be born.

Preview.  Sixty-nine years to the date later another Norek "first child" will be born.

Lucy's Godparents are Helena's brother, Michael Tibus (as mentioned above) and Clare Wrlkovska.  (Regarding the spelling of Tybus/Tibus, note that in this single entry Helena's name is "Tybus" and her brother's name is "Tibus" -- both apparently appropriate spellings at that time.)

Antonia Tibus born 1888, Dirschau, West Prussia

Antonia Tibus, christened Antonia Helena, was born on October 31, 1888, and christened on November 6, 1888.  Antonia's birth is a mere seventeen days after her cousin Lucy's.  Antonia is Augusta Ponczek and Michael Tibus' fourth child, and the second child to survive.

LDS microfilm #1,619,037, line 304.  Dirschau Katholishe Kirche records of the October 31, 1888 birth and November 6th christening of Antonia Tibus, second child of Augusta & Michael Tibus.

The church record lists her Godparents as Leopol __ Malekowr and Martha Ponczek.  A photostat copy of Antonia's "Christening cards" shows that Antonia had two more Godparents, namely Adalbert Malikonski and Antonia Ponczek.

Taufen (christening) cards for baby Antonia.  One from her namesake, her Aunt Antonia Ponczek.  Another from her second namesake, her Aunt Helena Norek.  Antonia apparently kept these keepsakes, bringing them with to Chicago, and one day they will be kept by Antonia's daughter Gertrude.

The Christening card from Antonia Ponczek (bottom-left of the four) is the special "name-sake" card.  Antonia Tibus therefore had two name-sakes -- her mother's side Aunt Antonia Ponczek and her father's side Aunt Helena Tybus Norek.

Augusta's maiden surname and that of her sister Martha are written in the Polish style in the church record.  On the special name-sake christening card Augusta's other sister, Antonia Ponczek (bottom-left of the four), writes her own name as "Ponczek" which is spelling used in my baby-book and the spelling known for Valerian, a cousin of Alfons and Antonia on their mother's side.

October 31st, Antonia's birthday, is also Halloween.  (When I was a child, I though the family got together on Halloween just for the trick or treating!  Not paying much attention.)
