Ancestry Chapter 19

1901 - Alfons Tibus in Training as a Baker, Dirschau
(click photos to see details)

Alfons Tibus, in training to become a baker, 1901, Dirschau, West Prussia

Two photographs of Alfons Tibus training as a baker in West Prussia.   Then a West Prussian photo of Alfons with a boy who might be in the circle photo, and might be a Tibus cousin.  Photographs except the circle photo belong to the Tibus family, provided by Alfons' daughter Olive.

Alfonso Tibus begins his training as a baker in Dirschau, West Prussia, at the age of 13.  (Information and photographs from his daughter, Olive.)

Alfons will not only continue that trade here in Chicago, he will also have his own bakery.  Lois and Carol both remember stopping at his bakery with their mothers.

The back-to-back photograph, with Alfons on the right, is marked with the name of a studio and the town address, namely Dirschau.  Is this Alfons with one of his cousins?

The circle photograph belongs to the Gertrude's family and is not marked on the back.  The father resembles Michael Tibus, but it is not him. The ears, eyebrows etc. do not match his other photos.  Therefore it is believed to be one of his brothers, August or Franz, with two sons.  Could the boy photographed with Alfons be one of the boys in the circle photograph?

Photograph of "Al's Bakery" located at 1256 W. Addison, Chicago.  This is it – Alfons bakery in Chicago, Illinois.

Again, both Lois and Carol remember stopping at "Al's Bakery" when they were children.

The Alfons Tibus family lived above the bakery.  Mentioned later is the time Valerian Ponczek lives with the family awhile.  Valerian is the cousin who will be seen in the photograph when Antonia returns to West Prussia.

Obviously this photograph of the bakery is getting ahead of the story.  Alfons himself has not yet arrived in Chicago.
