Ancestry Chapter 50

1938  Social Security, Techny for Ruth, More Weddings, More Births

1938 Social Security card -- a Social Security card is issued to Michael Norek on February 18, 1938.  Michael is 73˝.  Michael Norek's Social Security card showing the date of issuance is seen together with benefits letter in a 1941 entry.

Techny's "Blue Nuns" 1938, Techny, Illinois

The family was out at the St. Mary's mission house in Techny, Illinois.  That is the mission house for the SVD's, Uncle Father Pete's mission order.  Peter entered the seminary in 1933 but he is still years away from ordination.

Photo of Ruth at about this time period.

Antonia and Michael mention that Ruth wants to become a nun.  Father Tilgus says "try the Blue Nuns on the hill."  Ruthie didn't know before then that the Holy Ghost Convent even existed.

So down Waukegan road, and a stop at the convent.  On this first visit Ruth heard about a Sister stationed in New Guinea.  Yes, Ruthie wanted that, to go to New Guinea, to go overseas.

Michael Jr. marries Viola, 1938, Chicago

Michael Jr. 29 ˝  marries Viola, 21, on June 11, 1938.  Viola's maid of honor is Mike Jr.'s sister Gert.

Mike and Vi visit Niagara Falls.  Not on their honeymoon.  Sometime before the wedding.  With the Norek family.

Wedding medley.

Photograph of Michael Jr. and his fiancé Vi, set out  together with one of their wedding invitations, plus the envelope in which it was received by Gertrude Norek.

The invitation was saved by Gertrude.  Gertrude was Vi's Maid of Honor.

And that envelope was hand-addressed by Vi.
I would know that handwriting anywhere.

The crowd waits and then comes the bride and groom and rice.  The wedding of Michael Jr. and Vi.

Right photo.  Ruth Norek on the left smiling at the camera with a tilted hat, her husband Steve Norek to the left of her with cap and folded arms, Muriel smiling to the camera to the right of Ruth.  Older couple just right of center are Vi's parents.

Photo left.  Mike and Vi are dashing out, dodging the rice.

Gertrude, Vi's Maid of Honor, holding the bridal dress train as she runs down the church steps, also dodging the rice.

Andy Suitor, a friend and Mike's Best Man, follows Gertrude.  Vi's sister Rene is seen in her bride's maid dress, front left.

Vi's sister-in-law Ann is to the right, and somewhat between, Gertrude and Andy.  The gal in the white hat on the right of the photo is Dolly.  (My guess is that the gal in the polka dot dress is Helen.)

If anyone can identify anyone else, I would love to hear from you.

Bob Norek born 1938, Chicago

Stephen and Ruth Norek's only child, Robert, is born in 1938.

Steve's family is still living at Mozart Street, second floor.  (Bob Norek has promised to convert this story into a novel.)  He is one of the last-born of the first-batch grandchildren.

Photo left.  Bob Norek at an early age.  Cropped from a photo shown later.

Joseph born 1938

Anna and Joe's 4th and last child, Joseph Jr., is born in 1938.

1938 Great Grandchildren born:  one

Strings.  1938.  A Franz Tibus is listed as one of the 441 residents of the town or village of Schoneberg, Kreis Rossel.  If this is our Franz Stephen, the youngest Tybus baby, born 2 years after Helena, he would be 79 years old at this date.

1938-40.  Tom Norek is being trained as a pilot in a special Navy program at Lane Tech High School.
