Ancestry Chapter 52

The Decade Beginning with the Year of 1940

1940-1942  Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren, Weddings, WWII, Final Vows

 1940 Great Grandchildren Births:  two

1941.  $23.34 Monthly Social Security

In May of 1941, Michael Norek starts collecting $23.34 per month Social Security.  He would be disqualified if he earned $15 or more per month.  He has retired.  He is 76½.  His youngest child, George, is 15.

Another double photograph.

Left photo is a teenage George Norek.  George is about 15 here.

Right photo is Larry and Carol.

Margie born 1941

Dorothy and Vern's first child, Margaret (Margie) is born in 1941.

Grandchild Helen dies, 1941

Helen, Cecilia and Matt's first child (the little girl in photograph with her grandfather Michael Norek and same-age uncle Peter), dies at age 27 in 1941.

December 8, 1941.  Pearl Harbor.  The U.S. enters WWII.

Gertrude Norek marries Peter, 1942, Chicago

Gertrude Norek 27 marries Peter 26 in May, 1942.  The family members in her wedding party included her sister-in-law Viola Norek.

Dolores Norek marries 1942, Chicago

Dolores Norek 23 marries Charles 22 in June of 1942.

Dolores loves to dance, and she loved to roller skate.  (Presuming Aunt Dolores will still dance, but not skate?)  Dolores met Chuck at a roller rink -- Chuck was about to leave when he saw Dolores skate by, and the rest is history!  Uncle Chuck's family was from Transylvania -- no vampires there -- just a story.

Ruth Norek takes her vows, 1942

On July 6, 1942, Ruth Norek takes her final vows and becomes a Sister of the Convent of the Holy Spirit (then known as the Holy Ghost).  She takes the name of Sister Alphonse.  Ruth is not yet 21.

The photograph at Techny.  This is the day Ruthie has taken her final vows.

Front row from left, Ruth Norek, Dolores holding Ruth's boy Bob, Larry, Carol, Dorothy holding Josephine's girl Lois, Gertrude and Vi.

Back row standing, from left, Lucy, Michael Jr., George, Sister Ruth with a wreath of flowers worn over her new habit, the proud parents Michael and Antonia Norek, seminarian Peter, Eileen (Cecelia's youngest child) and Cecelia.

Photograph provided by Lois.

Ruthie beats her brother Pete to final vows, but Pete will beat Ruthie to Africa.  Ruth will do Africa too, and in great style.

George and his brother Mike working on the camera.

Presume this was taken before Mike Jr. took the group photo on the day of Ruth's final vows above.  Certainly taken on the same day.  You can tell by their outfits.
