Ancestry Chapter 59

1951 - 1966

1951 Christmas at Antonia’s

Father Peter Norek is allowed home-leave from Africa on the death of his father.  The family gathers for Christmas at Antonia's.

Left photo.  Grandchildren at Antonia's for Christmas.  Gertrude and Antonia far left bottom, and then Marilyn, Tony front with Pat behind, and Chuck Jr.  Then from left Judy, Uncle Father Pete, Vern Jr. with a large box for his size, possibly Mary facing away from the camera, Fran, Michael III, Margie far right and partly cut-off, and then back, right to left, are someone else who can't be seen, Ed, and possibly Tom behind Ed.

 1952 Great Grandchildren births:  Two

Photo right.  Another Holiday at Antonia's.  Fewer children in the photo but at least they are posing.  From left, front, Carol partly cut-off, Fran, Mary (very bottom of photo), Joan, and then back row are Marilyn and Judy.  Looks like an Easter.

Photo left.  Circa 1951 or 1952.  With the neighbor children (Carol and Linda) on Mozart.

1953 Great Grandchildren births:  Three

Backyard on Mozart Street.  Joan's First Communion, 1953.  Front from left, Toni, Joan, Fran, Marilyn and Michael III.  Back row is Mike Jr., Carol and Vi.  (Toni's father is Joan's godfather.)  In this photo you can see out the back gate, across the alley to the "prairie" which was vacant land running almost the whole length of the block.  The grandchildren then and later played in the prairie.

 Andrea born 1954, died 1954

Dorothy and Vern's fifth child, Andrea, was born in 1954, and died within weeks.  A brief life, but never forgotten by Dorothy, and she was so pleased when others also remembered her baby Andrea.

Betty, Michael Norek's first grandchild and a mother of seven, dies in 1956 at the age of 46.

Steve Norek with puppy Tum and then Bob Norek with an older Tum.

Tum is a very good looking Shepherd, and Tum appears to be obeying Bob.

The words “Auf Wiederse’en” are typed on the back of the photo, so perhaps Bob is about to leave for college.

George Norek marries, 1956, Chicago

George Norek, 30, the youngest Michael and Antonia's children, marries Eleanor in 1956.  Good choice Uncle George.

A neighbor on Mozart Street introduced George and Eleanor.  Many years later that neighbor would find himself a guest at Mary's wedding, seated at a front row table with George's surviving sisters.

Joyce born 1956

Dorothy and Vern's seventh and last child, Joyce, is born in 1956.

1956 Great Grandchildren births:  Four

Ruth Norek missioned to Africa, 1957

Ruth Norek, now known as Sister Alphonse, is missioned to Ghana, Africa on August 30, 1957.  There she will help establish St. Mary's Catholic secondary school for girls, and become its headmistress.

To work in the foreign missions was Ruthie's girlhood dream.  To be free of restrictions otherwise placed on women was also her childhood dream.

George born, 1957

George and Eleanor Norek's first child, George G., is born in 1957.  George's birth follows a family ‘tradition’ that won’t be mentioned here.

1957 Great-Great Grandchildren births:  Four

Matt and Cecelia’s family reunion, Summer of 1958.  Occasion was a celebration in Matt’s family.  Large family, and not all children or grandchildren are here.  Back row includes Matt and two of his brothers.  Cecelia is middle row, far left.  She is now age 68.  Dog in the front row is Tippy.

Mary Norek Born, 1958

George and Eleanor Norek's second child, Mary Norek, is born in 1959.

Thomas Norek born 1965

George and Eleanor Norek's fifth and last child, Thomas Norek, is born in 1965.

Tom is the last grandchild of Michael and Antonia Norek.  Tom is born 101 years after the birth of his Grandpa Norek (Michael) and 77 years after the birth of his Grandma Norek (Antonia).

1965 Great Grandchildren births:  Two

Leo Jr. dies, 1966

Leo Zeck Jr., Lucy's second child and Michael Norek's second grandchild, dies in 1966 at the age of 54.

I thought that Leo was a bachelor, because there is no indication otherwise on the family tree.  But I saw a grave in St. Joseph's cemetery, River Grove, Illinois (looking for maternal relatives), which has engraved "Leopold _______" and "1912 to 1966."  This must be Leo _________ Jr. -- the dates are correct.  But it was a double gravestone -- husband/wife type.
