Ancestry Chapter 58

1951

Michael Norek
Sept. 20, 1864 - Oct. 25, 1951

Michael J. Norek dies, 1951, Chicago

Michael J. Norek dies at the age of 87 on October 25, 1951.  He died in his sleep at home, on Mozart Street, first floor, in the early morning hours.

Antonia is a widow at age 63.

Michael J. Norek had lost his first wife Helena 45 years before.  Of his and Helena's nine children, Lucy is now 63, Cecilia 61, Steve 59 and Anna 54.  Three of their children died in infancy, namely John, Helen and Therese.  Mary died at age 14, and Anton at age 18.

Eight of his nine children with Antonia survive him.  Mike Jr. is now 43, Josephine 40, Peter 38, Gertrude 36, Dorothy 34, Dolores 32, Ruth 30 and George 25.  Tom died in WWII at age 20.

On the first batch side, Michael J. is survived by 15 grandchildren (one grandchild predeceased him) and 25 great grandchildren, and there will be 30 more great grandchildren born after his death.

On the second batch side, Michael J. is survived by 16 grandchildren, and there will be 7 more born after his death.  So far there are 48 great grandchildren, but none born before his death.

The combined numbers are 18 children, 32 grandchildren, 103 great grandchildren.

Mike Jr. and his family were then living upstairs on Mozart Street.  I remember my mother waking me for school and shushing me and the rest of us children to be very, very quiet, because Grandpa had died downstairs.  (Like Ruth at the time of Leo’s death, I did not connect death with sorrow, or with being quiet.)

The Norek tombstone, St. Boniface Cemetery, Chicago.  Lines.  In German.  Then Michael Norek.  In German.  Then "geb. 20 Sept. 1864" and "gest. 25 Oct. 1951."  The German abbreviations "geb" and "gest" mean geboren and gestorben, which translates to born and died.

Death Certificate for Michael Joseph Norek.  Age 87.  Date of birth September 26, 1864.  Birthplace Germany.  A U.S. citizen.  Father's name unknown (and still is).  Mother's name unknown (it is Josephina Norek).  Onset of the cerebral hemorrhage 3 days before death (he fell into a comatose state).

Dr. Graham signed the Certificate as the decedent's physician since 1941.  (Dr. Graham continued as our family doctor until the late 1960's.)  Funeral from Furman's, 3100 W. Irving Park Rd.
