Ancestry Chapter 60

1967

Sister Ruth returns for a home-visit from Ghana, July/August, 1967.

Sister Ruth returns from Ghana in either late July or early August, 1967.  Some of the family are out at O'Hare to watch her come through customs from the upper viewing area.  She arrives in her state-side blue habit, not her missionary white habit.  (She changed during a stop-over in Belgium.)

Antonia begins to feel ill, or possibly finally admits she has been feeling ill.

1967 photograph of Sister Ruth and Antonia at O'Hare Airport,
taken shortly after we watched Sister Ruth go through customs
at the International Terminal.

That Antonia needed medical assistance became apparent
shortly after this photo was taken.

Antonia then decided that a residence at the elderly home
run by Ruth's convent was appropriate.  This decision was
contrary to Antonia's earlier comments, but never materialized.

Antonia Tibus Norek dies, 1967

Antonia dies at age 78 (almost 79) on August 25, 1967.

Her husband Michael died sixteen years before.  Her son Tom was lost at age 20 twenty-three years before, during WWI.

Eight of her nine children survive her.  Michael Jr. is now 59, Josephine 56, Peter 54, Gertrude 52, Dorothy 50, Dolores 48, Ruth 46 and George 41.

Antonia is survived by 23 Grandchildren.  So far there are 48 Great Grandchildren, and many Great-Great Grandchildren.

I remember the funeral procession.  A long, long procession, crawling across Chicago, from St. Monica's church all the way to St. Boniface cemetery on Clark Street.  Uncle Father Pete with the funeral directors, with the casket.  Immediately behind, in the first private car, Mike Jr., and Vi with Joan driving.

Death Certificate.  Antonia Tibus Norek.  The residential address given is that of Josephine's home on Nagle Street in Chicago.  Her father's first name is listed as unknown.  (It was Michael Marsia Tybus.)  Her mother's maiden name is listed as unknown.  (It was Augusta Ponczek.)

The Norek tombstone at St. Boniface Cemetery, Chicago.  Michael and Helena's names are engraved on the front, while Antonia's is seen on the side, together with Mary Norek who died in 1908 (the inscription is close but wrong), Anton who died in 1914, and Antonia's own child who predeceased her, Lt. Thomas Norek who died in 1944.

Both Helena's and Antonia's graves are next to that of Michael Norek.  With some urging on Stephen's part, Helena's descendants granted permission for Antonia's casket to be placed in the same plot as Helena's.  It will always be Helena's name inscribed with Michael's at the front.
